3 Things to Consider Before Buying New Gear

In the perfect environmentally friendly world, we would never have the need to buy new gear again, we would just use what we have until the end of time. Unfortunately, the reality is that sometimes we simply need new gear. This can be especially true with activewear. If we’re doing our jobs as athletes, we are using our gear to its absolute fullest potential. When the time comes to buy something new, ask yourself these three questions before hitting the add to cart button:

1.     Is it durable? Will this new item stand the test of time? I have owned some of my jackets for almost 20 years. I have also purchased sustainable sneakers that fell apart in a matter of weeks. Does the brand you are buying from have a reputation for building gear that lasts? Will this item transcend seasonal trends?

2.     Can I buy it used? It might not always work to buy used gear, but it is definitely something to consider before heading out to buy something that used a lot of energy, water and resources to make and transport. Here are three reliable websites to scour for quality used gear.

3.     Is it made consciously? Do your research. Is the company you are purchasing from conscious (be on alert for greenwashing), do they source sustainable fabrics? Do they have a recycling program? Do they adhere to fair labor guidelines? Are they a B Corp? Do they have a carbon offset program? This gaiactive approved brands list may be helpful, but it is by no means a definitive list.
