Breathwork for athletic recovery
What the Research Says
Research shows that slow, deep breathing slows heart rate, improves lactic acid removal, and reduces oxidative stress, which can all support athletic recovery. Slow breathing has also been shown to decrease cortisol (the stress hormone) levels. Intense exercise and psychological stress increase cortisol levels; if they don’t get a chance to lower, it could lead to performance-reducing symptoms like muscle wasting and decreased bone density.
