Breathwork Can Improve HRV and Sleep Quality— University of Alabama Study

A small feasibility randomized controlled trial conducted by researchers at The University of Alabama at Birmingham has found promising evidence that engaging in a regular breathwork exercise called Sudarshan Kriya can decrease resting heart rate, increase HRV, and improve sleep quality.

While these findings are unsurprising, they are a good reminder of how a breathwork practice can support athletic recovery. An increase in HRV is correlated with recovery and performance-readiness. Quality sleep is one of the most critical factors in athletic recovery, as sleep deprivation is known to increase stress hormones and slow muscle repair.
