How to Recycle Your Old Ski Boots

A few ways to keep these big hunks of plastic out of the landfill

When it comes to your ski kit, ski boots might be the piece with the least sustainable options available. Ski boots are made from plastics such as polyurethane and polypropylene, which can take hundreds of years to decompose. While there are unfortunately no easy options for the eco-friendly disposal of your ski boots (yet), here are some sustainably-minded tips for what to do with yours when you can’t use them anymore:

How to keep your ski boots out of the landfill

Consign, Swap or Donate Ski Boots

If your ski boots are still in good condition, you can sell, swap or donate your old ski boots. Click here for a list of local outdoor consignment stores in your area who might accept used ski boots. You can also contact local non-profit ski clubs or schools with ski teams to ask if they are in need of your donation. Right now, it looks like the following organizations are accepting certain donations (always contact them first!):

YES

Recycle Ski Boots

Blizzard Tecnica has a well-publicized recycle your ski boots program that looks really cool, but they only have drop off locations in Europe (flying to Europe to drop off your ski boots is probably not a sustainable option, but if you have to be there anyway, it might be worth looking into drop off options).

In the U.S., ski boots might be recyclable through your home recycling bin. Call your local recycling center to ask if they will recycle polyurethane plastic.

Upcycle Ski Boots

If you are into ski-themed decor, consider upcycling your ski boots into lamps or planters.

Unfortunately ski boots aren’t the most sustainable product by nature, but you can help make them less damaging to the environment by giving yours a second life.
