Colorado Ski Resort Now Runs on 100% Renewable Energy
Arapahoe Basin is one step closer to reaching its sustainability goals
Colorado ski resort Arapahoe Basin, a.k.a. A-Basin has announced that as of October 2023, they are running on 100% renewable energy. The ski resort mainly uses electricity to power the resort, and the shift to renewables is an important milestone in achieving their pledge to be carbon neutral by 2025. In making the transition, A-Basin joins the likes of Jackson Hole Mountain Resort, Wolf Creek Ski Area, and Berkshire East Mountain Resort, which are also powered by 100% renewable energy.
A-Basin’s renewable energy is sourced from onsite solar arrays, community solar farms, subscription-based utility programs, and renewable energy from Xcel Energy. A-Basin has long incorporated sustainability initiatives into their operating plan, which is indicated by actions such as releasing an annual sustainability report and employing a sustainability manager. In 2022 A-Basin won NSAA’s Climate Change Impact Award.
“We are so excited to be sourcing all of our electricity from renewable sources. So many A-Basin projects benefit from utilizing renewable electricity to make them go,” said Mike Nathan, Sustainability Manager at Arapahoe Basin Ski Area, “I’m especially excited to continue growing our electric vehicle charging infrastructure, knowing that those guest trips to the ski area are now 100% fueled by carbon-free, clean electricity.”
To cut down on carbon emissions, skiers and boarders can also reach A-Basin by public transport or carpool.
