GM Makes a Bold Move Towards Electric
GM has announced that they will heavily invest in electric vehicles with plans to launch 30 electric vehicles by 2025 and to be mostly electric by 2035. They have also committed to becoming carbon neutral in their global products and operations by 2040, have signed the Business Ambition Pledge for 1.5⁰C, and worked with the Environmental Defense Fund to develop a “shared vision to eliminate tailpipe emissions from new light-duty vehicles by 2035.”
As the largest automobile manufacturer in the United States, this move to electric is thought to have major implications for the automobile and energy industries and the economy.
Many climate experts agree that the move away from fossil fuels is imperative to protecting the planet as we know it. According to the NRDC, the burning of fossil fuels accounts for about three-quarters of U.S. carbon emissions.
As terrible as COVID is, climate and ecological breakdown will be worse. We must begin acting - really acting - to minimize the damage. Which means coordinating an end to the fossil fuel industry, for starters.

“Climate change is real, and we want to be part of the solution by putting everyone in an electric vehicle,” said Chairman and CEO Mary Barra. “We are transitioning to an all-electric portfolio from a position of strength and we’re focused on growth. We can accelerate our EV plans because we are rapidly building a competitive advantage in batteries, software, vehicle integration, manufacturing and customer experience.”
GM notes that their electric vehicle fleet will be available “at all price points for work, adventure, performance and family use.”
This bold move from GM is potentially exciting for the outdoor community who haven’t had a lot to choose from thus far in terms of electric cars with mountain performance vehicles at affordable price points. We’re excited to see what happens next.
