On to Launch First Zero Waste Performance Shoe
Swiss performance shoe brand, On has announced that they are launching the world’s first zero waste performance shoe, Cyclon.
Not only is the Cyclon shoe made from over 50% bio-based materials made from castor beans, it will be fully recyclable and available through an innovative performance shoe subscription service. The Cyclon subscription will cost $29.99 per month, and will give runners access to unlimited Cyclon shoes. Once a runner wears out their Cyclon shoes, they will simply send them back to On to be recycled and will receive a new pair.
On is considered a top running shoe brand globally and they seem to have found a way to build a sustainable shoe without detracting from function. It is pretty remarkable to find a shoe that gives equal consideration to both performance and sustainability. Cyclon weighs under 200 grams (7 oz) and is engineered to perform for elite level competition.
“We wanted to show that sustainability and performance go hand in hand. The subscription service enables runners to not only receive one of the highest performing shoes we’ve engineered, but to continuously receive the best and most up-to-date shoe technology coming out of our lab,” says On Co-Founder Olivier Bernhard.
The Cyclon subscription isn’t On’s only sustainability initiative. They strive to reduce their environmental footprint associated with use of petroleum-based materials including virgin polyester, polyamide and chemical-based adhesives in favor of 100% recycled polyester (rPES), 100% recycled polyamide (rPA), organic cotton and water based glues as well as increasing the use of circular materials to facilitate easy recyclability. They are also working towards Science Based Targets (SBTs) to reduce their carbon emissions.
Cyclon is scheduled to launch in fall 2021. Pre-register for Cyclon here.
