On June 9, 2022 Yellowstone National Park announced the renaming of a 10,551-foot peak east of Yellowstone Lake to First Peoples Mountain. The peak was formerly named for a settler who led an horrific massacre against a band of Piegan Blackfeet peoples in 1870.

Native News Online reports that Native American communities welcome the name change to what is considered sacred land and that the change was the result of many years of work by several Tribes and Tribal organizations.

Yellowstone’s announcement notes that US Board on Geographic Names consulted 27 Tribes about the name change and that they “may consider changes to other derogatory or inappropriate names in the future.”
