Two U.S. ski resorts have already closed their slopes in the last weeks of February. Both Vail Resort owned Paoli Peaks in Indiana and privately owned Ober Mountain in Gatlinburg, Tennessee closed on February 22, 2023. Last season the resorts both closed on March 6.

“Mother Nature wasn’t on our side this year, and while we worked hard to manage through the rain and warm weather, we no longer have the snow base needed to remain open. We are deeply grateful to our team members who made snow at every opportunity and operated the hill with dedication and passion,” said Paoli Peaks General Manager Chris Shadid in a social media post.

According to news sources, Paoli Peaks was open for just 24 days in the 2022-2023 ski season. On top of a season that lacked snow and cold temperatures in much of the mid-atlantic and northeast parts of the country, the National Weather Service is predicting warmer than average temperatures for the three months ahead.
